The Performers Village is an introduction to the world of ISTA, the International School of Theatre Anthropology, founded by Eugenio Barba of Odin Teatret. In this volume, the villagers seek to present the times as much as the theories of ISTA to give a feel of the richness and intensity of life in this itinerant community of theatre scholars, actors and directors. The village “takes place” in different corners of the world, and its inhabitants have their professional homes in East and West, North and South. Yet each time ISTA happens, a unique sense of community is created, sustained by a peculiar social structure, a shared identity, and recurrent rituals. This is why the participants have come to see it as a village, centered around a well of tradition.
