Three movement artists speaking 8 different languages come together to research communication. How do the languages they speak influence their thinking, their use of metaphors/aphorisms and their movement language ?

Artists Iannes Bruylant, Gabrielle Emily Aidulis and Keren-Or Ben Shachar will research the impact of language on dance, investigating how elements like metaphors, timbre, intonation, and accent can shape movement and expression. Their personal experiences of immigration, has taught them the importance and challenge of language expression and acquisition. As they say in Dutch – learning a new language is not a “soft boiled egg”. Which might not make sense in English, but a more fitting metaphor about rocket science is always around the corner. The artists seek to understand how language can affect the way we move, using their different linguistic backgrounds to create movement material and play with the connection between verbal and non-verbal communication.

Dancers and choreographers Iannes Bruylant (BE) Based in Norway , Gabrielle Emily Aidulis (LT) and Keren-Or Ben Shachar (IL) based in Denmark. The three artists met each other during their studies in the Netherlands. Over the years, they have found a common artistic ground while maintaining diverse backgrounds in the languages they speak and the movement practices they have explored. Collectively, they have experience in gymnastics, martial arts, urban dance, contemporary dance, and ballet which provides some a broad range of movement styles and experience. Each bringing a unique background and professional experience, they will work together for the first time in the studio.
