In Memoriam: Helle Fuglsang

 

It is a great sorrow that Helle Fuglsang is no longer with us.

Helle was an amazing person with incredible courage. She was curious, interested in others, and deeply committed to the world around her, which seemed increasingly unfair. Helle always took the time to pause and listen when we met, even when she was busiest. She filled the space she shared with us with beautiful laughter, crazy whims, offbeat ideas, amazing thoughts, dreams, and wonderful fantasies. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone like Helle, who could throw herself into the unknown in the wildest artistic projects that seemed completely impossible to carry out—but not for her. She had the courage because this was where she experienced venturing into something she didn’t know beforehand. Helle loved the unpredictable, the unexpected, and new worlds. Encounters with people who opened up to her—and she to them—enriched everyone’s lives.

For the rest of us, who all too often choose what’s safe and secure, I think that living in and with uncertainty is what made Helle so fully present in the moment when she interacted with the rest of us. Thank you for everything you’ve given us. We’re going to miss you so much!
