MY VESTERBRO: A CITY WALK ABOUT INEQUALITY, SPIRIT, AND QUIRKY STORIES

Vesterbro has undergone a significant transformation, but behind the renovated facades, there are still traces of
the neighborhood’s original way of life and social challenges. We invite you to join a city walk that focuses on inequality,
poverty, marginalization, and the effects of gentrification.
But despite the major changes and modern development, Vesterbro is not ready to let go of its soul.
The walking tour is also, to a large extent, a story about the very special spirit and strong sense of community that continue to
thrive in Vesterbro.
The tour is led by Poul Hansen, a retired teacher and longtime chairman of the Skjalm
Hvide housing cooperative—the very location of the Experimental Station, situated right in the heart of Vesterbro’s “cream of the crop.” Poul has lived in Vesterbro
for half a century, and he shares historical insights and personal, witty
stories from his many years in the neighborhood. Along the way, we’ll also meet other local residents who’ll talk about
their daily lives and personal experiences. They will offer a glimpse into how the local sense of community is kept alive
across generations and life circumstances.
On our route through the neighborhood, we’ll delve into specific places, each with its own unique story;
such as Baggårde in transition, which has been transformed from cramped workers’ housing into modern
communal spaces; Stjerne Radio, which served as a base for the resistance group Holger Danske during World War II
; and the church, which is making a difference for nature.

 

We’ll serve coffee after the tour. Participation is free

Ends at the Experimental Station at approximately 4:00 p.m. Approximately 3 km on foot. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
