Co-Weaving, Monophony

During the research, I will transform my previous dance performance (2024) with five performers into a solo version, . I will weave my prose text, which is intertwined with personal memories of migration and friction, into the fabric of movement. By employing choreographic scores of repetition, amplification, and transformation, I aim to shift negative memories into a performative act of enchantment, hoping that the enchantment exorcises our perception of considering social problems as individual rather than collective.

THE TEAM BEHIND

I am Yeong Ran Suh, a choreographer, art/practice-based researcher, originally from South Korea, currently living in Copenhagen. I have a BA in Dance (minor in philosophy) at Ewha Womans University (2007), MFA in Choreography at Korea National University of Art(2011), and MA in Religious History at the University of Copenhagen(2019).
I conducted extensive research on ancient beliefs: shamanism, Korean traditional dance & rituals from decolonizing perspectives, creating multifaceted dance performances based on an anthropological investigation. My major dance performance works include I Confess My Faith (2012), The God of the Earth Comes Up Imperfectly (2013), The Death of Vagina(2015), and Floating Bottle Project(2016-2019).
After relocating to Denmark in 2016, I studied religious history, specifically analyzing the current religious customs and laws from post-colonial perspectives. Since 2020, I have been a member of “Becoming Species,” a performance climate biodiversity activist group, creating various participatory performances in public space, providing open workshops for citizens and kids. Besides, I regularly guide a creative dance workshop for kids, including Ukrainian refugees and bilingual families in Copenhagen.
As an artistic researcher, I have participated in multiple research projects, such as the medical anthropology project ‘Sensing Old Age’ (2021), and ‘Art & Ageing’ (2022), The research led me into initiating (2024), a choreographic participatory workshop inviting citizen to reflect current care labor and responsibilities and build our desirable future care landscapes together. I am actively writing various articles about Ageing, Ecology, Art, and Becoming Species.
