Laments often combine improvised melody, poetry, and natural tears. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The workshop includes practical exercises designed to provide a hands-on experience of how to express grief. We will engage in group exercises to explore the interconnectedness of individual and collective grief. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">No prior experience is required\u2014neither in laments, singing, improvising, nor writing poetry. The only requirements are an inner calling to try or practice laments, the ability to support others in their grief, and the capacity to hold others while being held within a group. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Bio Tuomas Rounakari:<\/strong><br \/>Tuomas Rounakari is an internationally acclaimed violinist, composer, ethnomusicologist, and educator from Finland. He is a versatile musician whose work ranges from avant-garde improvisation to folk metal, and from contemporary classical compositions to film scoring and sound design. His Doctor of Arts dissertation explores altered states of consciousness and the ability to engage in dialogue with the non-human realm through music. The case study in his dissertation focuses on the Bear Feast traditions of Finland, Karelia, and the indigenous Khanty and Mansi peoples of Siberia.   <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tuomas Rounakari has been a key figure in the revival of the nearly extinct lament tradition in Finland. He learned the essence of laments from the Karelian elder Martta Kuikka, who was the first to bridge the Karelian lament tradition and modern-day Finland. Subsequently, together with Pirkko Fihlman, Tuomas Rounakari developed a model for teaching laments in grief circles that allowed participants to create their own unique laments and be supported in their grief. The work explores the continuous exchange between body and voice\u2014how the body becomes voice, and how voice reshapes the body.
