** Since last time
————————————————————
A lot has happened since the last newsletter in February – and here are some highlights from March and April.

** Vesterbro Theatre Festival 2018
————————————————————

Reproduction of this year’s festival poster, designed by Zofia Zelazny (https://www.behance.net/zofiazelaz863d) .
We have had the pleasure of welcoming children and their adults to the Vesterbro Theatre Festival. Both the Narrative Theatre and the Theatre Patrasket played to full houses here at the Experimental Station. The Narrative Theatre performed an old favourite – Bjowulf – with its usual exuberance and audience appeal, much to the amusement of the children and adults in attendance. Teater Patrasket played their brand new wonderful performance “SØNDAG” which had just premiered and which plays again at April Festival 2018 in Syddjurs Municipality.

Teater Patrasket has been the profile of the week in Proscenium in March, where they among other things unveil their next project “Pinochio” together with director Alex Burne – and gives an apt analysis of the challenges for touring Danish children’s and youth theatre groups today.
Read the whole exciting and highly relevant article here (http://www.proscenium.dk/artikel.asp?id=6629) .

Speaking of children’s theatre, it is also worth mentioning that there has just been an International Theatre Day for Children and Young People – Illustration by Mo Willem – read more contributions to the day here (http://www.assitej-international.org/en/the-world-day-of-theater-2018/) .

** AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT
————————————————————

Just before the Easter holidays, we held a seminar on audience development in an artistic context. A group of invited performing artists engaged in a dialogue on the concept of audience development and related themes, based on the experiment “LYDEN AF PUBLIKUM (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/forsoeg/hovedforsoeg-lyden-af-publikum/) ” and their own practices. The topicality of this subject was palpable and there was lively discussion. Read the minutes of the seminar here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Referat-af-LAP-seminar.pdf) .

We will also participate in the conference ‘STEMMER FOR SCENEKUNSTEN (https://kum.dk/temaer/dine-oensker-til-fremtidens-scenekunst/konference-stemmer-for-scenekunsten/) ‘ in Odense on 14 May, which is part of the Ministry of Culture’s consultation on the future of the performing arts. We look forward to contributing to the debate with a (hopefully) broad cross-section of industry and policymakers. By the way, see the Ministry of Culture’s consultation page, where the consultation responses received from the industry are published – deadline is in 1 May. Read more here (https://kum.dk/temaer/dine-oensker-til-fremtidens-scenekunst/hoering-om-fremtidens-scenekunst/) .

** Exchange seminar with artistic educational institutions
————————————————————

Photos: Rikke Jeppesen Rod
On 9-11 April we had – for the second year in a row – the pleasure of co-hosting a 3-day exchange seminar between Dramaturgy at Aarhus University, Theatre and Performance Studies at Copenhagen University, Forsøgsstationen and The Danish School of Performing Arts. The theme this year was “artistic research” and the students from the programmes had the opportunity to learn about the traditions and practices of different institutions around artistic research: Forsøgsstationen, where they both got on the floor and tried out what it means to do artistic experimental work, led by Øyvind Kirchhoff and Lotte Faarup; KUA where there was, among other things, a lecture with lecturer Solveig Gade from AU and lecturer Laura Schultz from KU; and finally at DDSKS where there will again be hands-on work with two different workshops. Read more about the seminar here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/2018/04/11/udvekslingsseminar-kunstnerisk-forskning/) .

** Beautiful ‘guests’
————————————————————

** On
————————————————————
The critically acclaimed music drama performance “Switched On (http://www.teatermomentum.dk/event/taendt/) “, had production runs here in February and March. T hey are currently in Aarhus on 1-5 May at Teater Katapult, after their premiere in Odense at Teater Momentum and a run at Husets Teater here in April. The show is a co-production between Husets Teater, Katapult, Kvint&Svendsen and Teater Momentum. Two of the main forces behind it have their permanent home here; Helene Kvint who is a long-time member and Nina Kareis ‘lives’ in the house as part of Livingstone’s Cabinet. Both have regularly made artistic experiments here in the old cinema.

** Zenobia
————————————————————
Andreas Dawe has also been working on the new project “Zenobia” – in the past three weeks he and the team have been working on the first tentative steps of translating a graphic novel by Morten Dürr and Lars Horneman from 2016 about the Syrian girl, Amina, who escapes from war in a crowded boat on the Mediterranean Sea into stage language. Andreas elaborates:

“With development support from the Danish Arts Council’s Project Support Committee for Performing Arts, I am currently working as a director, playwright and supervisor – together with dancer and choreographer Fie Dam Mygind, actor Bo Carlsson, musician and composer Claus Carlsen and set designer Julie Forchhammer – to explore how the book can be “translated” into a theatrical expression. In other words, we are in the workshop!”
Read more about the project here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/2018/04/30/besoeg-af-zenobia/) .

** April festival 2018
————————————————————

We notice every year when there is a children’s theatre festival, not least because several of our residents do theatre for children – and many ‘ordinary’ members as well. We have had the halls full of theatre groups rehearsing for the festival. Teater Patrasket has been running “FLYV” and “SØNDAG” – Det Fortællende Teater with “Amled” and “Holger”, Kompagni Kalas with “Norden Rundt”, Dunkelblå with “Coyote”, nycirkuskompagniet Cikaros & Teater Kimone with “Omvendt”, Ellen Kilsgaard with “TOTAL!DANS!”, Teater Klumpen with “Stresspølsen”, and the Olske Orkester & Teater Værk with “Ræven går derude”. We hope everyone had a great festival and that it provides some extra miles on the road this coming season!

Congratulations to Teatercentrum and the local partners for another great festival!

** Cultural policy blog: Hc Gimbel “Talent and Elite”
————————————————————
Our blog has kicked off again after a long break with a post by Hc Gimbel that takes up the “talent and elite” theme for an exciting close read.

Read the full blog post here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/blog/talent-og-elite/) .
If you have something on your mind that could be relevant for us to bring as a contribution to the cultural policy debate, or would like to suggest a blog writer, please send an email to rikke@forsøgsstationen.dk

Open audition for Nadine George workshop
————————————————————

Photo: Øyvind Kirchhoff. Picture from open rehearsal in 2016.
On the last day of the annual workshop with Nadine George (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/workshop/nadine-george-workshop-2018/), we will hold an open audition. It is Sunday 27 May at 12 noon. A small group of interested people will have the opportunity to see how Nadine works and what the group has been working on. This year it is “Grief dresses Elektra” by Eugene O’Neil that comes under loving treatment.

Please write to rikke@forsoegsstationen.dk to secure your place for the open test, as places are limited.

** CPH Stage 2018 – open house at the Experimental Station
————————————————————

This year we have taken the initiative to hold an open house in connection with CPH Stage. During the week of Monday 4 June to Friday 8 June, the house will be open from 8am to 4pm where you can come in and see what we are doing here in the old cinema. There will be good opportunities for informal chats or just taking a breather from the busy festival centre further down Boulevarden.

The full programme is published here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/aabenthus/) and in the CPH Stage programme. Activities for that week so far look like this:
* Free morning coffee and bread and cheap soup for lunch
* GAGA people from the morning with Siri Wolthoorn (link (http://www.cphstage.dk/event/gaga-people-2018-06-04-08-15/) ) – Mon-Fri at 8:15
* 2-day workshop with Angelina Watson in Nadine George Voicework (link (http://www.cphstage.dk/event/stemmetraening-for-professionelle-scenekunstnere-med-angelina-watson-2018-06-04-10-00-2/) )
* Exhibition and screening of the concert LYDEN AF PUBLIKUM on video (link (http://www.cphstage.dk/event/aabent-hus-2018-06-04-08-00/) )
* The experiment Young Nature Wild with young people v/Nordic Performance Art
* Nap room for the tired in Truffaut

Thanks to the Vesterbro local committee, which supports the initiative.

** Workshops
————————————————————
In addition to the Forsøgsstation’s own workshops with Nadine George (waiting list) and Angelina Watson (only 8 places! See above under CPH Stage), there are several workshops in house over the spring and summer that have rented space with us. These include:
* Viewpoints with Caroline McSweeney on 12 May at Freja&GROB (link (https://www.facebook.com/events/732432316966479/) )
* Summer workshop throughout week 25 with My Lindblad/Stands&Dans – free for members by registering before 4 June (link (http://standsogdans.dk/shop/sommerworkshop-uge-25-2018/) )

Current membership attempts
————————————————————

It is always possible to read about ongoing or previous trials via the database (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/databasen/) or under trials (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/forsoeg/) on the website, where you can also download trial reports and read the trial team’s intention reports – i.e. the trial team’s presentation of the trial itself. Members can apply for time and sparring on trials – see how here (http://forsoegsstationen.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7e4ab507ee0681aacca9cd6c7&id=ee294188b7&e=7b9b825c44) . Views may not always make it into the newsletter, so keep an eye on our facebook page (http://forsoegsstationen.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=7e4ab507ee0681aacca9cd6c7&id=3ce7a29bec&e=7b9b825c44) and the website if you are particularly interested in experiencing the artistic research processes up close…

** Exploring with the body
————————————————————

The aim of the experiment is to develop a teaching format that invites young people into the world of the choreographer and dancer, where they are an active part of the space, participating and having a say both in the teaching and in a creative work process. The experimental team is Mette Møller Overgaard, dance artist, Marlene Bonnesen, dancer and choreographer and Lars Dahl Pedersen, dancer and cand.mag. in philosophy. Based on previous years’ experience with D.A.N.S and ‘Dance as Practice’, the group will concretise the already existing tools from the projects, and try to make the co-creative and participatory element sharper.

The experiment began with an intensive week (week 7) at the Experimental Station and then locally at secondary schools. The experiment will be back at the Experimental Station in week 25. Read more here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/forsoeg/medlemsforsoeg-med-kroppen-paa-opdagelse/) .

The concept has now been selected for the Dance Halls Dance for Children scheme and will tour with it this autumn. Congratulations on getting the experimental results to work in the real world! Read more about the scheme and the specific project here (http://runningsculptures.dk) .

** Young Nature Wild
————————————————————
Photo: NPA press photo
In conjunction with their performance “Nature wild (http://www.cphstage.dk/en/performance/nature-wild/) ” during CPH Stage at Avenue-T, Nordic Performance Art is holding an experiment where they invite children to join them in an artistic exploration of nature. It will be part of the activities of our Open House event, possibly with a screening. More on the project later – in the meantime, you can find out more here (http://nordicperformanceart.dk/en/portfolio/nature-wild/) .

Special for members

Become a member
————————————————————
If you’re not yet a member but would like to be, you can read more about membership and conditions here (https://www.forsoegsstationen.dk/medlemsskab/) – or come along to our open day to see what we have to offer.

** Use the network!
————————————————————

We would like to encourage members to use this unique network (which many already do – not least via the facebook group “Forsøgsstationen intern” (https://www.facebook.com/groups/944010352410912/) ) – both in the form of invitations to screenings of trials or rehearsals, but of course also when it is time to play a performance.

** Lend a hand at the open house!
————————————————————
As you can see, we have already set a framework and planned some activities for the week, but would like you to get involved with ideas and invite you to an Open House meeting on Tuesday 15 May from 11-12. We hope that some of the regular ‘residents’ and other members might like to ‘open the office’ during the festival, whatever that might mean for a particular group/performer.

On a more practical note, you can also lend a hand or donate the soup on one of the days (as we didn’t get the funds we were hoping for, anything helps!). These are single 4-hour shifts during the week from 8-12. As a thank you, you can get a festival pass for more than one shift, and the same privileges as the ‘regular’ CPH Stage volunteers.

** Joint working day
————————————————————
We will have a joint working day on Monday 25 June 2018 from 10-16.
What is it? It’s a day where we encourage members to lend a hand with getting painting and other handy work done. Of course there is Lottes super-soup for the attendees. More details coming soon, but mark your calendars…
